I have a load bearing wall that I want to remove. But I don't want to see a beam I would like the smooth ceiling flow throughout both rooms. What I would like to do is put the beam in the attic above the ceiling support boards. Do you have any sugestions on how I can attach the ceiling support boards and would it work?

What you need to do is determine the span and find out what size structural beam you need to carry the load with out breaking or sagging,such as three 2 by 8's-10's,lvl's.then you support the ceiling on both sides of the wall being removed.once the wall is removed measure the width of the beam and then cut the joist that width where the wall once was.slide the beam up into the slot supporting it on both ends with jack studs as wide as the beam.you will most likely have to open the walls to place the jacks in if you want the walls smooth also.with the beam flush to the bottom of the joist toe nail the joist to the beam the install joist hangers.the beam can be taller than the joist if you don't mind the top of the beam sticking up higher in the attic.this is called a blind header.so if I did'nt explain this well enough just ask a contractor in your area about a blind header.
