SSN still pending, can I use my ITIN

1. During the year 2009 I was on H4. I got my ITIN after paying taxes for 2008 along with my wife as "married filing jointly".
2. In 2009, I got my H1 and am working since October 2009.
3. I had applied for my SSN and for some reason it is still pending.

My question is... can my employer use my ITIN for the purpose of W2? And if before filing my returns I receive my SSN, what should I be doing?

Wait for SSN.
Employer may not be able to issue W-2 without SSN.
