    ITIN Application
For submitting the ITIN application for my wife in India:
If we have copies of her passport attested from the regional passport office in India,is it enough to submit the ITIN application or is it mandatory to get the Apostille as well from Ministry of External affairs.
When contacted concerned agencies they are telling that they won't issue Apostille for passports, but rather do for Birth,Death, degree certificates,etc..

Please advise.Totally in a confused situation:(

You should read instructions to W-7. See what you can do to meet the filing requirement.

The Apostille requirement is an established procedure for several Third World countries that requires, in addition to getting the passport copy notarized, that the ITIN applicant get a certificate of authenticity (called an apostille) from the foreign government that issued the passport.

The reason is apparent: It is relatively easy to convince a notary to fraudulently notarize a photocopy of a phony passport. The apostille adds a second requirement to ensure that the passport is authentic.
