I have covered a floor drain in my basement and rerouted my kitchen plumbing away from my catch basin in my yard. My kitchen sink now goes directly into my stack. I now have a sewer smell in my basement. All of my down spouts and floor drain outside my basement door also feed into the catch basin. I can't seem to get rid of the sewer smell. Any suggestions? Should I have not covered the floor drain inside the basement?

Are you positive the floor drain isn't connected to the house sewer. Either way, you should have plugged(sealed) the floor drain before covering it. If its not plugged off, when the trap dries up, you will get smells up through the floor drain. I think you need to either make access to the floor drain permanent, or pemanently plug it off before recovering it.

I have permanently covered the floor drain along with kitchen drain to the catch basin. I filled the drain with newspaper and filled both drains up with about 8-10 inches of cement. I was careful not to allow the cement to drop into the sewer lines to the catch basin. I believe the sewer lines described go just out to the catch basin but it is an older home built in the 50's in Chicago.

Could it be that the kitchen lines being removed have caused a problem because it is no longer vented?
