My mom has an oil fired furnace that just stopped working. I replaced the transformer(white rodgers) that has the connections for the Thermostat,flame detector,etc. That didn't fix the problem. I have hit the reset button and that doesn't work either. At one point,I rotated the Fan Limit switch counter clockwise and the furncae poped on. When it turned off,it failed to work again. Would a bad fan/limit switch cause this kind of behavior? I don't want to call a repairman to find something that I could have fixed myself.Thanks

You said when you turned the fan/limit switch the furnace kicked on.. did you mean the fan? If so then that is normal... The first step if "nothing" is happening is you jump out the T T terminals on the primary (box with reset)... if unit starts when you jumped T T then the problem lies within your low voltage line and/or tstat. You alreadystated that something works when you turn the dial so we know you havr power... do you hear humming from anywhere? Buzzing when you hit reset??

When I turn the dial the fan does come on,the time I turned the dial counter clockwise,the furnace ignited and I saw flame. That's when it ran for a few minutes,went off and wouldn't come back on. No humming or noise when I hit reset.If jumping the TT terminal is the connections for the Thermostat I have already done that. I have even bypassed the thermostat to see if it would kick one,but it didn't. Used a volt meter and checked continuity between the low voltage line and they check out OK.

Now the fan doesn't even pop on when I turn the dial?

I would start there if I were you.. if you turned the dial and it actually let the burner run.. then id say something is wrong with the limit... it actually should be the other way around... while burning if you turned the dial, it should drop the burner out on limit.

I ordered a replacement fan/limit switch. Hope that's it. The only thing left is the big ignition transformer. Would that cause my problem?

No.. if the ignition transformer was bad.. the burner would start.. only the oil would not ignite and spray into the chamber... then go off on reset.. and depending on how many times you hit that reset button.. yuo can spray a lot of oil into that chamber... which will make problems once the problem is solved...

Ok,good. The time it did start it fired up,so maybe the only problem is the fan/limit switch.

Well it can be as simple as a clogged nozzle or A dead transformer. Do you hear the transformer sparking?
Be very careful now because if the oil is getting into chamber and not igniting, It will rumble and boom when it finally does.
Try it only one more time and listen carefully for the sparking noise of the transformer... If you hear this, Then replace the nozzle with the exact one you took out.
