    Pretty straight forward, just plug them into the router and share files and folders from there.
    Make sure they are in the same workgroup.

    Go get a "switch" all you do is plug the switch in the router it will all configure automatically. But if you router have ports simple just plug in the rj45 cables and restart router. Then in windows setup networking... in xp/vista. Windows 7 should be automatic.

    I switch is a cheaper option, however it depends on your network uses. If you have massive amounts of information that need to be transferred efficiently you will be better off with a router, if you are talking about the standard home network, then you don't really need any more than a switch.
