    Hotair ballon velocity
This is a multi-part problem on my physics homework. If someone could help me with the steps I greatly appreciate it.

A hot air balloon is traveling vertically up-
Ward at a constant speed of 5.8 m/s. When
It is 14 m above the ground, a package is
    Released from the balloon.
The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2 .
After it is released, for how long is the
    Package in the air?
    Answer in units of s.

What is its speed just before impact with the
    Ground?
    Answer in units of m/s.

Now assume the hot air balloon is traveling
Vertically downward at a constant speed of
    5.8 m/s.
After the package is released, how long is it
    In the air?
    Answer in units of s.

What is its speed just before impact with the
    Ground?
    Answer in units of m/s.

    galactus

This can be solved by using

    Where a=-9.8, v=5.8, d=-14

Plug in and solve for t.

Galactus wouldn't initial velocity be negative or positive relative to whether the balloon was rising or descending?
