I need to replace a symmons shower faucet stem assembly, part # TA-10. Do I need a Plumber or can I do it myself.
Hi Rezj...
You'll need to go to home depot or a similar home improvement store and purchase a Symmons TA-10 stem replacement assembly.
When you get home, you'll shut off the water supply to the valve and then remove all the trim around the valve. Open the valve 1/2 way to drain (open sink at a lower level to drain). Then, as easy as this sounds... it is... get a wrench or a pair of water pump pliers and grab onto the T-11 nut and unscrew it counterclockwise. Unscrew T-11 and be sure to remove the old washer that goes with it. Then you will remove the TA-10 stem and install the new one.
To install the new TA-10 you'll want to insert it into the T-11 nut all the way. Once you have it screwed in all the way back the stem out 1 full turn... OK?
Then you'll want to place the new TA-10 washer in place and screw the new TA-10 stem assembly into place. Snug it up pretty good and then use your NEW HANDLE to shut off the water supply to the valve. Turn off the valve you opened on the floor below and then turn the water supply to the valve beack on. Bleed the air out of the system from the valve and from all sinks throughout.
Once you confirm that there are no leaks you'll want to install the trim and the handle and be done with this... :)
Back to you...

PS: IF you have issues after installing the new stem assembly it could be that your valve also requires a change in the hot and cold seats... this gets a little more complicated to fix.
What valve on the floor are you talking about, T-30 ?

I suggested opening a sink at a lower level...
"Turn off the valve you opened on the floor below" is where I wanted you to turn this valve off before turning the water back on is all... ;)
You also mentioned the hot and cold seats. I removed the handle to turn the screw to get the shower water hotter. Do I need to replace the hot and cold seats or is that something else?
The hot and cold seats would be a last resort effort to save the body of the valve. You will only need change these seats IF the replacement stem fails to shut off both hot and cold water. Seat replacement is usually reserved for older valves... like 10 years or older.
Changing seats requires special tools... hopefully we won't need to discuss!

Thanks for the help.
Sorry for the slow responses tonight.
Pop back if you run into any issues... glad to help here.
I'm working on this same project and finding that I can't get the T30 handle to come lose. Also, the trim seems to be NOT coming lose. In fact, it won't budge. I'm hoping its not glued to the fiberglass...
Hi DIY...
When you remove the trim plate the T30 should come with the trim plate as it is attached to the trim plate itself by the T27CL... (see above).
If your trim plate is adhered to the wall take a small putty knife and get up under the trim and carefully pry all aorund the trim plate... should come loose.
Any more issues just let us know...
