Problem with "Renew your IP address"
Hi there, I am new to this forum, and not very computer literate, but can find my way around with straightforward instructions.
My ISP is Virgin Media, and I have an Ambit Cable modem supplied by Virgin.
I have a wireless LAN running off a Netgear Wireless Router type WGR614 v2
I am using a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop, which I have had for some years, along with a Dell Mini 9 netbook, running under Windows XP Professional, Version 2002 SP3, that I have had for about 3 months.
I use both of these in Crete as well as here in the UK, and when in Crete I am using Vodafone Light through a SIM card equipped dongle.
Both Laptop and Netbook have worked perfectly well on both ISP's until this last week, when the netbook suddenly stopped accessing the Internet - the Laptop, that I am using now, is still OK.
On the Netbook, when I hover the cursor over the Network symbol on the workbar it shows the following :-
SSID : (NETGEAR)
Speed 54.0 Mbps
Signal : Excellent
Status : Authenticating
Address : 0.0.0.0
If I then hover over the adjascent symbol, I then get :
Wireless Netwotk Connection (NETGEAR)
Speed : 54.0 Mbps
Signal Strength : Excellent
Status : Acquiring Network Address.
But nothing happens
After a while, the small Screen symbol then stops flashing, and a red X appears.
If I right click on the screen symbol, I get a menu of options, vis.
Disable
Status
Repair
View Available Wireless Networks
Change Windows Firewall settings
Open Network Connection
If I select 'Repair' I get a new screen 'Repair Wireless Network Connection' and a few processes take place, stopping at "Renewing your IP address" and nothing further happens.
It would therefore appear that I have good connectivity to the Netgear Router, with a Strong signal, but without this IP Address I cannot of course connect to the Internet.
I have looked at other posts in the Forum, but found nothing quite like this same issue, and am reluctant to try experimenting with possible solutions without proper guidance, and much of what I have read so far is rather too 'Techy Speak' for me - sorry!
Can anyone help to get me back on track, as I am going into Hospital on Monday for an operation, and would quite like to take my Netbook with me to check my emails?
Looking forward to receiving some good simple advice on this problem.
