I am trying to find out what I have here, very interesting
I have an old framed drawing or something of what looks like a black/Indian hunter on a horse which to me looks like an Arabian. It is on a sort of cardboard type medium and the entire piece with detail (horse's muscles etc.) was pushed out from the back of the medium so it is dimensional! It is truly Amazing and very old. I would love to email a picture to anyone who may have any thought on this. FYI; in the lower right corner is something written but barely visible to the eye.. Abby? George? Very difficult to make out. Thanks for any help with this mystery. Here is a pic of this awesome piece. If interested in seeing a picture through email I can do that also.

    Thank you, Marie

I think you already posted a pic of this painting, and I don't think you had any responses. Yes, the horse was arabian, the person on the horse was an east indian with a rifle, probably boar war.

I don't know how they could make cardboard 3D and made to last that long over the years, I. e. dampness, etc. I know how I would do that with sheet copper, but not a paper material.

You must have posted a pic, otherwise how could I describe the above.

If you want a proper appraisal, take it to an art dealer who can give it a good going over and tell you actually how old it is, but from what I saw, I can't do that.

Thanks Tickle, I know I can bring it to a dealer. But isn't that what this forum is all about? Getting information from others? It is very unusual and I agree with you re: the medium. It has been under glass. It seems the artist pushed the image out from the back of the medium which is what makes it "dimensional". I don't believe I said it was 3D.
In any case, I sure thank you for your ideas on the piece and appreciate your input.
    Thanks,
    Marie

Yes, this forum is getting information from others, runamuk, but you haven't had any responses and unless we can actually see it first hand, how can we determine what it is. No you didn't say it was 3D, but the effect you mention is 3D, which isn't all that odd considering it wasn't just invented. Any raised picture is actually a 3D work.

Edit: basically, a dealer can look and touch, we cant, we can only look at an image here, which isn't that helpful to the poster or us.

    You are welcome Marie.

    Hi, runamuk!

What you have might be a 19th century photograph of a work of art. Sometimes, they were produced on a type of cardboard. The detail in it is amazing!

I did need to remove your email address from your post. I would hate to see you get spammed because it was exposed here. Plus, once a thread has been started, all information that's shared needs to stay on the thread so that others with similar questions will benefit by the information that's exchanged.

    Is it perfectly smooth, please?

    Thanks!

Well, just the same tickle I am disabled and it is not easy to get around. So, I choose this for now. Actually, I have had responses via email which is an option here. I am having fun trying to get people's opinion and I have only been here a few days so seeing that this is a public place to post things, and new people are here everyday. I think it is worth re-posting.
    Cheers from another Canadian!

Good luck on your search, Marie. You are very diplomatic as only, as I find, Canadians can be. I was hoping that some of our tried and true forum members would help, some, who like me have been here for quite a bit. The art world is not new me, but as I said, if we can touch and feel, turn the picture here and there and assess it properly, it is not possible to tell you exactly what you have.

Hi Clough, I actually wanted to get back to you re: your post about getting rid of stuff. Boy do I know what you mean, and I have some cds that I obtained from a PHD but I am in mountains now and when I get home I have a stick note to be sure to forward you that info. It is all consuming isn't it?

Sir, thank you so very much for your input I so appreciate it. Yes, it is a smooth somewhat thick 1/8 inch maybe piece of cardboard like material? However the horse and rider are pushed out from the back of it.. Sort of Embossed to give it an uneducated name. I just find it so amazing and I am having fun here with input..
Between the input and my research, I may someday come close to knowing more about the artist. I did get a call from a Chicago Museum who is interested in seeing it but as was stated, it is very difficult to appreciate this piece in it's entirety without holding it. Again Clough, thank you and stand by for my post re: help with "stuff". Should be home in a few day's and I will post then. God Bless
    Marie
Oh my Clough, I did not realize about the spam.. Thank you ever so much for straitening me out on that.. I am curious though how you were able to edit my post? I am so green here. : ) thank you

From the image that you've posted and your stating that the texture of it is smooth, my educated guess is that it's a photograph.

What are the dimensions of it, please?

    Thanks!

I would say Clough, the dimensions are approx. 7.5 x 9.5. it also occurs to me that I may want to post a pic with the frame which is very old also.
    thank you again.

    Clough,

Just curious as I think about what you said re: email I wonder why they give you the option of inserting it into the post?
    Thank you

    thank you again.

If you post with an image of it in the frame, that would further help us here.

We don't guarantee results, but we can try!

I do have to go now, though...

I have to make an evaluation on a couple of pianos with a customer as well as get ready to direct a rehearsal of our local barbershop chorus.

    Thanks!
