Won't work with new thermstat ,but will when connecting two wires together from furnace

Your unit uses millivoltage to control the system. You have to have a thermostat that will work with a millivolt system. You can also not have the thermostst wires to long. Usually 10 to 15 feet is all the millivolt system will carry.
