The puppy belongs to my friend who can't afford to take him to vet. The puppy was nauseaus for days and is now weak and drinks water but will not edat any food, is scared to eat. He just lays there basically depressed now. Doesn't have parvo according to his owner but might have something starting with d he said? Please can you help?

If it is after eating cheese there is a chance of pancreatitis.
It's not that common but dogs that have a predisposition to the disease can have it triggered by fatty foods.

Unfortunately there are also a lot of other things it could be as well and you have no way of knowing without a vet.

I know it's harsh but it has to be said... why does you friend have a young puppy when they cannot afford vet care?
I understand people loose jobs and have bills etc but it's not really fair on the puppy.

I second this. What the heck? WHY would someone get a PUPPY who cannot afford to take it to the vet.

Sorry but they need to learn some responsibility and take the poor dog to the vet. Gawd, it could have parvo, the owner would NOT know that unless they are a vet and did the fecal test.

Tell your friend to stop trying to act like he knows what is wrong with his dog and take it to the vet, or surrender the dog to someone who can provide it proper care.

I understand your feelings regarding being a responsible pet owner, and I don't like it myself, but it is what it is and I'm trying to hel[p because obviously the poor puppy needs it. The puppy is one of 9 that the momma gave birth to. The owner of the puppy also owns puppy's mom and pops. The puppy is the last of a litter of 9 and doesn't have a good home yet. The owner lost his job and place to live while the mom was pregnant. He managed to find homes for the other 8 puppies which was no small feat, with taking care of all those animals without a home. He loves his dogs and is doing the best he can in what he knows to be a less than ideal situation. So are there any free vets around? In the meantime I will check on his condition tomorrow and get back to this board for more suggestions if he isn't getting better. I appreciate any advice I can impart for the well-being of this puppy and that's what would be most helpful. Thanks.

My parents last litter of Great Danes was a litter of 5... they kept one, sold 3 easily but then were stuck with one until he was 5 months old. They finally found a good home for him and they were glad they waited... it's a lovely home (they had a few idiots try and buy him but they soon got shooed away)

It is a really unfortuante situation, but the person needs to think of the well being of the animals at hand, not his own. Vomiting in dogs and puppies can range from mild to life-threatening.
Some causes of vomiting can be quite serious and even potentially life-threatening. If a pet is lethargic, depressed or showing signs of dehydration, then he NEEDS to get this pup to the vet.

There is so many things that could be wrong with this pup.
And it does sound like Parvo. Why is he so sure that it isn't parvo? I highly doubt he has been vaccinated, if he can not afford to take his sick puppy to the vet now, how could he have been vaccinated?
It's situations like these that make me so up set, and obviously he is not a resposible pet owner for letting his dogs mate in the first place. I am almost certain, that this person is not a reputable breeder.
You should suggest that this owner surrender his pets before they die and infect other animals in the process.
In the mean time this "person" needs to keep the puppy hydrated, pedialyte in small amounts. I would be surprised to find out that this puppy has been treated for worms, so that is my next suggestion, when a pup is infected it can cause diarehea and vomiting, sluggish behaviour etc. This "owner" should take food away, this will allow the dog's stomach and intestinal tract time to recover from the insult which caused the vomiting. Allow at least six to eight hours with out offering food to puppy.
Offer the clear fluids( you can use water, ice cubes, gatoraid, pedilyte etc.) in small quantities every two to three hours over the course of the next 12-24 hours. Do not allow the dog or puppy to gulp large amounts of the water or other clear liquids at one time. This will promote further vomiting.
Usually puppyies vomit because their stomachs are inflamed, which is called gastritis. It can occur if they have ingested something that is inedible.
There are two basic types of gastritis; uncomplicated and complicated.
Complicated gastritis is when your puppy vomits for more that twenty four hours and has a high fever, or if he becomes unresponsive or depressed. These symptoms are severe and need immediate veterinary attention.

Did he say he thought it was distemper?
