I will retype my question. I am thinking of purchasing a new home. While viewing the home which is still under construction, ( almost finished Interior work to be done) I noticed the tub surround has no sheet rock or greenboard behind it. I can see the insulation and vapour barrior. How should I expect that the contractor doing this work to seal at the top of the surround. The tube surround is a one piece shower and tube surround. It almost seems as if the whole unit was to large to fit and they cut away the drywall to fit it in place or maybe this is normal? Note two of the walls are exterior facing walls. I have heard of installing tub surrounds like you describe, without any backer-board, From here I can't tell whether it applies to your situation.

This is a normal installation for new surrounds.

The use of drywall would be used for units with 3 or 4 piece units,not one piece.

Agreed, this is normal installtion. Your one one piece surround is the only surface needed. Greenboard would be a waste of time and money since not a drop of water will ever touch it.

This is normal as been stated.the green board if using joint compond or blue board if plastering should be installed over the nailing flange of the tub sorround.

Thank you for your help to this question. I have been through a number of homes under construction and understand why this is the way it is. The tub surrounds are in during the framing stage or just after insulation and poly go in. I just purchased a new home still under construction so I am sure I will have more questions. Except for maybe HVAC as that is what I do for a living.
