How do you know what size snake to get inorder to do an efficient job of cleaning out a kitchen sink that has black sludge in it? Desperate... domestic engineer and have had problem way too long!

We use a 3/8ths. Snake for the small stuff. I have also used a 1/4" hand held snake for those 1 1/2 and 2" drain lines . Good luck, Tom
