1998 Honda Civic HX alternator bolt is stuck
I've got a dead alternator on my 1998 Honda Civic HX with about 200K miles. Yep, I've read the FAQ on replacing the alternator. I got the top (tensioning) bolt out no problem, but the lower (through bolt) is giving me fits. The 14mm nut came off easily, but the bolt is refusing to move. I've got the driver side wheel off to give access to the bolt end. Gentle persuasion is futile. I've cut off the end of the bolt to prevent mushrooming, and with stonger persuasion (i.e. bigger hammer with a long drift pin) I've gotten maybe 1mm of movement. My patience is wearing thin and my arm is getting tired. Any suggestions?

Try lifting on the alternator to take the pressure off the through-bolt; then, the bolt should come out. Have someone else lift, as you remove the bolt. Spray with WD-40, if necessary.

No amount of twisting, heating, hammering, listing, soaking in WD-40 had any effect. As a last resort, I air chiseled off the aluminum body of the alternator around the bolt. The good news: the parts store accepted the mangled alternator as a core return.

When I reassembled with the new alternator, I liberally coated the new bolt with anti-seize.

Glad to see you got it fixed.
