I have a 48 yr old brother who lives with me and he only gets social security and a ssi for about $8000 a year because he is mentally disabled. This is his only income. I want to know if I can claim head of household. Is his money considered gross income?

Your brother does not have any filing requirement. SSI is not considered income. Only SS benefits, without any other income, is not taxable.

You can claim your brother if you provided more than $8,000 of support in 2009. Then you are head of household, if you are not married. Your U.S. Tax Return: Filing Status: Head of Household

Collecting Social Security AND SSI seems a little sketchy. One usually cannot collect both. Is he considered your "dependent" for Tax purposes? His income is not taxable.
