Are compresion plugs to cap off a cleanout " Code'? The ones that you have a wingnut that you can tighten and the rubber expands into the wall of the pipe.

How do I remove a 3" rusted cast iron plug. Is there a technique heating. I am afraid to use the hammer it may crack.

    Your advise is appreciated.

Those plugs (wing plug and / or dollar plug ) are for testing rough plumbing only. They are not designed to permanently plug clean outs. They are usually removed after inspection - and a correct, Code approved plugs are used. These plugs usually match the same material as the pipe. If Inspector notice these test plugs he/she will ask you to remove them and to install the right plug.

Removing old plug is not an easy job. If you have good work space around it, rent the biggest pipe wrench there is , engage it, and step on it with full weight of your body. Sometimes it will go. If not, you can cut it with sawzall and chisel it out. Then you will have to instlall new plug.

Advice: if you are installing new galvanized / brass plug, put lots of grease on the threads. It will keep the plug from rusting inside metal pipe. Also, it will be easy to remove it next time you have to access the clean out.

Let us know how you did. Good luck... Milo
