I have Office 2003 & Norton 2007 security.

How do you stop the automatic vius scan every time you open a word document?:

Must report that I don't have Word 2003 and have yet to be convinced that I need it in addition I don't have Norton but I will do my best to answer your question anyway.

You can also turn off the Office Scan request in Norton. It could be under the miscellaneous menu depending on your version.

Go into your Security/Macro settings within Word and make whatever changes are necessary.

For some reason my copy of Microsoft Word doesn't display my virus program in Security/Macro settings.
