I have a 4inch vent pipe that turns into 1 1/2 then takes a 22 degree angle to go around a floor joust then another 22 degree angle to go in the wall strait to the roof.. Will this make the tolet girgle and bubble and not flush?I have another tolet in the basement right under the bathroom up stairs that flushes well no trouble with.Can some one help me?

While you can increase a vent it's against code to decrease the size. When your fixtures began to talk back to you they do it in two ways. They "gurgle" atcha or they "bubble" atcha. The "gurgle" is caused by vacuum caused by a blocked vent. The noise you hear is the sound of the air venting through the water of the trap. The "bubble" is caused by back pressure due to a partial blockage What happens is that when you flush or drain the discharge runs down the drain line and hits the partial blockage and bounces back sending a bubble of air ahead of it. A partial blockage will also cause a backup sending soap or crud into a fixture until it can drain away.

Tom when I bought the house it we had it inspected but little did we know that it is a huge mess.There are pipes going everywhere down there.I have tried snakeing it out 3 or 4 times nothing has happened.I was wondering if I put a cheater valve on this pipe weather it would work.When I flush the toilet there is a huge bubble that comes up then it usually goes down but not all the time.I presently have my bathroom stripped clean to renovate so I though it would be a good time to fix everything and to do it right.I have never had anything come back the pipe just the bubbling.I even replaced all the pipe to the vent line to try to fix this problam Brian


Tom I also tried a cheater valve and nothing it still lets a huge bubble out and then some small bubbles.. I will tell you the 3inch pipe goes stait down from the toilet about a foot down then a 90and it goes about 2 feet to a 22 and then a strait run to the vent stack this run is about 2 and a half feet.now when it gets to the stack the stack goes strait down to basement floor but above about an inch or 2 up the 3 inch vent line has some sort of flattop on it looks weird but anyway it turns from 3 inch to 1and a half inch followed with some 22 angle turns to go up by a floor joist Brian

You say you replaced rhe drain once so it must still be assessable.
Would it be possible for you to install a closet bend or a quarter bend with a short raiser. Maintain 1/4 " fall and use two eighth bands to connect to the sanitary tee in the stack? Or you could replace the Tee with a wye and only buse one eighth bend.
I'm trying to get away from that one foot drop directly under your flush. If you've replaced then drain to the stack that's about the only reason for the "bubble" I can come up with. Good luck, Tom

I am wondering Tom when I dump a bucket of water in the flush it works well with no bubbles.I think that the problem is right close to the toilet because the bubbles ar really big at first and shoot out of the bowl.Is the 1 foot too much drop? Do you think

Ol boy I think your right I will try to get this changed around, not much room but this problem has plaged me for a long time and 3 plumers later nothing.. Hello Tom I gave that a try,I shortened my riser,it is about a 5 inch drop now about the height of my elbow then it goes across about 1and a half feet to a slight down grade then to an 22 degree bend then to the stack... No change... I am getting discouraged with this thing... Anything else to try short of ripping the walls down and redoing it from top to bottom. Brian


Tom I was reading other problems as well and discovered this problem seems to be my toilet,, the big bubble comes out the 1 inch jet hole and I tried the hole cleaning with the cloths hanger... every hole was full of calcium... it helped the flush but still has the big bubbles... I am going to try another new toilet,this toilet isn't very old but who knows I might have gotten a lemon

Hello Tom... ha ha bingo the toilet was the problem, I bought a new toilet that never did work... I bought a lemon it was a Gerber toilet... I wish I would have talked to you sooner and read these forums.Any way Tom I would like to thank you for all your help and information on plumbing it has been very insightful thanks again. Brian
