I have a well; usually the water is quite good, but when we have flooding, the well can get contaminated with e coli. It's been a wet winter and spring; I've chlorinated the well a couple of times, and am thinking about installing a filter. It's very costly to hire a service to do this so I'd like to do it myself but don't know 1) What type of filter to get 2) Where to get it 3) how to install it or find out how to install it.
Any suggestion?

Let me tell you what the Centers for Disease Control has to say about E.coli. Notice that they do not suggest a water filter for this problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests actions that you may take to prevent E. Coli infection. These include:



Avoid swallowing lake or pool water while swimming.

Thoroughly cook ground beef and avoid unpasteurized milk.

Make sure that persons with diarrhea, especially children, wash their hands carefully with soap after bowel movements to reduce the risk of spreading infection, and that persons wash hands after changing soiled diapers. Anyone with a diarrheal illness should avoid swimming in public pools or lakes, sharing baths with others, and preparing food for others.

Cook all ground beef and hamburger thoroughly. Because ground beef can turn brown before disease-causing bacteria are killed, use a digital instant-read meat thermometer to ensure thorough cooking. Ground beef should be cooked until a thermometer inserted into several parts of the patty, including the thickest part, reads at least 160

We stested positive for e. coli as well, in fact it's a common problem in our area... most well system filters also don't take care of it and in fact can end up cutivating the bacteria...

I would suggest contacting a well expert (http://www.cleanairpurewater.com )... who has given me some great advice... espically on the health and wellness of water...

I personally went with a 3 phase filter... clorine injection, clorine filter, then sediment filter... we also have a salt system for hardwater for the showers/baths...
