I have an older house in San Francisco. I have recently changed the kitchen faucet, and re packed two leaking valve stems in the shower. I had to shut off the water at the city meter. The tenants are now complaining of lower water pressure at all the water sources of the apartment. I have checked the fixtures for debris, and found none. The city meter shut off was very difficult to turn on and off.

Did you check the aerators on the faucets for trash? Are you quite sure you opened the meter stop all the way up? Let me know, Tom

Six months ago I purchased an American Standard Champion Four, 1.6 gallon toilet after having a leak with the prior toilet causing water damage downstairs. I replaced the wax seal at that time. At that time I found the pipe under the toilet to be clogged. I had the stack snaked from the toilet to the cleanout in front of the house. Then snaked from the cleanout to the main sewer line at the street. Since that time the new toilet’s water level inside the bowl drops after each flush within 2 minutes of being flushed at the rate of about two inches inside the bowl. Then within five minutes it has completely dropped to only a small amount remaining. Originally, I thought it was just part of the new toilet and something I needed to get used to. Until the other night while watching a home improvement show and found this not to be true. The gas sewer odor seems to be strong since the bowl doesn’t have water in it. While running water in the sink and shower you can hear it through the toilet going down the pipe. We have not had any backups since. I have checked the stack outside on the roof and nothing is blocking it. I checked the hose running into the pipe inside the toilet that fills the bowl and it is not blocked and is running water through it each time you flush. No water is on the floor of the bathroom and the ceiling downstairs is not getting wet. I have manually added extra water to the bowl only to just have it just drop back down to very little again. Note, I am not running water in any other part of the house, it just continues to drop in the bowl. Do I have a vacuum problem puling water up over the trap? If so I would I test for it. Or do you think I have a leak in the toilet? I would appreciate any help you could offer. I hope I have given you enough information.

Slowly pour 1/2 to 1 gallon of water into the bowl. Do no pour enough to make the toilet flush. Do not use the drain for any other fixture.

If the water level in the bowl drops, you have a defective toilet (crack in bowl.)
