My husband claimed exempt (was supposed to be temporary, but payroll accidentally forgot the change it back per request and new w-4 form)... I claimed 1 all year. We have 2 children and are married filing jointly. Avg gross yearly income = 54,000.00, will we still end up owing (Thanks to our employer)?

I just got done doing a tax computation for someone who had $50,000 in income with withholdings of $1,200.

Their tax liability was $2,769 on $24,000 in taxable income.

YOUR taxable income is $28,000, so your tax liability is $3,369. You should get $2,000 for the Child Tax Credit and $800 for the Making Work Pay credit.

That leaves a total tax liability of $569, which I suspect is LESS than what you had withheld from your job.

BOTTOM LINE: Your refund will not be large, but you will NOT owe any additional taxes.
