My hot water heater is in the garage only about 20 feet as the crow flies from the kitchen, but it takes at least 2 minutes to get hot water. I'm concerned about wasting water and about the effectiveness of my dishwater and clothes washer. What can I do?

You can install retrofit hot water circulating pump. That will give you almost instant hot water.
