    Filing after being in jail

My son filed taxes last year and this year. He di not file taxes in 2003-2007 due to being in and out of jail/prison. He did work some each of those years. Due to his incarceration his w-2 and stubs and all personal papers were thrown out by landlord when he went to prison. How can he go about filing for those past years. Companies no longer exist and he doesn't remember all of them anyway?

Your son should first call the IRS and ask for tax transcripts for 2006 and 2007.

Next, he should call the state tax department and ask for the same type of transcripts from the state for 2006 and 2007.

Both the IRS and state tax transcripts have the W-2 information on them. You need the state transcripts for the state tax withholding information. Any competent tax professional can then extract the W-2 information needed to prepare the returns.

Filing the returns for 2003, 2004 and 2005 is a waste of time, because the three-year statute of limitation for claiming the refunds has passed.

Its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's. This can lead to confusion. You should start a new thread. So I've moved your question to its own thread.

Not a problem, common newbie mistake.
