    1098-T not showing correct amount
This one is not straight forward. I started an MBA in Spring of 2007 (January). My school (Purdue) gave us 1098T right away for tuition we paid for January 2007 semester so many students can claim it with their 2006 return ($6000 for one semester). I decided not to. Then when I filed for 2007 return I claimed my education credits on $10000 (out of $12000). I did same when I filed 2008 return. Now my 1098T is showing only $6000 in tuition and fees although I paid $12000. Besides my employer gave me $5000 in 2009. If I use this 1098T then I'll be able to claim only $1000 as $5000 was by employer. My school says I can use tuition receipts to show that I paid $12000. Is it possible? They are not in a mood to change my 1098T.

    Thanks
    Imad

    Imad:

It is BEST if you have a corrected Form 1098-T issued by the university, because that is the document from which the IRS determines the validity of your tax claim.

If not, the IRS may challenge your tuition claims. When that happens, you CAN show the receipts which show what you paid when, but getting the Form 1098-T correct will prevent the problem before it even begins.
