How do I remove the canapy ring, I twist it but it only moves a very little? It is a hampton bay with no screw apparent

Their may be a plastic ring at the ceiling that turns a little and drops down to expose the screws.

The ring will be the 1/2" or so closest to the ceiling. You may have to twist it with some force.
