How do you know which major is appropriate to you?

Go for a subject that interests you.
Simples really.

Personally, I saw too many people come into the university with a declared major that had no real foundation...

For ex, one student chose to be a chemistry major. This person was really bad at some of the fundamental skills needed to succeed in this path, but she'd chosen that major because her HS teacher in chem was funny and made the class fun.

Not exactly a great reason to spend tens of thousands on schooling... especially when she didn't have a clue of what shed do with the degree when done.

Likewise, I have a friend who was being pushed to go to college... he wanted to work in medicine, had good grades. But instead of a four year degree he took some basic sciences at a community college and then enrolled in a local medical college nuclear med tech program. So in less than three years he'd graduated and was making more money than many others who had spent four or five years getting a BS or BA in the sciences.

So... as mentioned, you can talk to a counselor about your strengths, you can look at what classes you liked in school and what skills you seem to have...

But some schools actually don't ask you to choose a major until after the first year, when you are really just getting in some general classes.

Can you give some specifics about yourself? What classes do you struggle with? What hobbies? Do you like to work with groups? Individuals? More by yourself? etc...

do you have any idea what you would like to study? It doesn't matter if there's more than one thing that interests you. Spend the first year getting the general requirements out of the way, and take a class or to in areas that interest you to see if you'd like to pursue them more fully.

most schools don't require you to declare a major your first year there. Even if they do, you can always change it later. College students change their major about 2.5 times (if I'm remembering the statistics correctly) on average. If you only change your's once, you're doing better than most ^_^
