    Hipaa
I had a miscarriage last week. The hospital registration person called my mother and father and told them she was calling from pre-op and needed to speak to me right away about my "procedure" the next day. It was no real emergency, just the regular pre-op stuff. I did not plan to tell anyone I was having a d and c for a miscarriage. The hospital had my current phone number and left a message on my phone, but I was dropping my son off at school and it took five minutes to return her call. My parents were frantic to know what wrong with me and I had to explain the entire thing to them. They are very upset that I didn't tell them ahead of time. This has caused a lot of stress and put a strain on our relationship. I am also employed by my parents. I feel like I may have to quit my job or take a leave because of this. I think it was wrong for them to call there or even talk to my mother. (that number was in my file as my place of employment) I feel like they have made a hard time even harder. Have they broken any laws? Thank you, JB

I don't believe they have broken any laws. Someone had to answer the phone at the other end, and the hospital had to leave a message. I don't think that message broke any privacy rules. It may have caused some discomfort at home, but basically you should have let your mom know enough so she would not worry.

And the company you work for often has to know the reasons you needed offf.

After that, of course you did not "HAVE" to tell them, if you did not want to, you could have merely told them, I am not telling you, you choose to try and do this without telling your family or the people you work for.

If you had been honest upfront with mom and day ( souinds like you live at home)
And OMG ( sorry) how dramatic can we be, you choose to hide this from them, and somehow think it is the hospitals fault for mom and dad having to find out ? Please understand when we make stupid choices we live with the result.
