    Halogen light fixture troubleshooting
I have a halogen ceiling light fixture, which over time began lighting only after a delay of several seconds - sometimes it took up to a minute for the light to come on, but it always would come on eventually. Thinking the problem might be a defective bulb, I replaced the bulb with a new one (brand name) of the same voltage etc. We thought the problem was fixed as the light then came on immediately several times when we tested it. Later the same day, the fixture would not come on at all, and still will not.

The fixture is approximately twelve years old and is wired to two three way switches.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks.

Could be corrosion at the lamp holder, or a loose connection at the lampholder, assumes this is a 120 volt lamp. If 12 volt, could be a defective transformer.

I recently installed a range hood with halogen light fixtures. One corner of the hood began to come down due to a stripped screw hole into the cabinet, and I decided to fix it without removing the hood entirely by drilling a deeper hole and using a longer screw. In was alone, and my only reliable source of light was--you guessed it--the halogen lights themselves. (You know where this is going, don't you?) When the drill bit sunk into the cabinet wood faster than expected, it touched the sheet metal for just a very short time and then the chuck made a rather abrupt contact with the inside top of the range hood. Both lights went off. The fan still works fine. My wife tested the bulbs in another fixture and they work. No blackened wires, and connections seem tight.

Any ideas? I know what you're thinking: (1) Don't ever do that again! (2) Why don't you leave home repairs to the minimally competent? I won't, and my wife made me do it.

    Help!
