How long should the oven element stay on during the cleaning cycle and should you see sparks coming off the element?

It is possible to see sparks coming off the element; I think the element cleaning time is 2 hours, it should stay on the whole time. Don't worry about it, just let it do its thing and be thankful you don't have to use oven cleaner!
