2001 Whirlpool Calypso electric dryer GEW9868KQ0. The last several days when drying clothes, the dryer, clothes & the entire downstais smells like gas or oil. I just had preventative maintenance done on both washer & dryer yesterday by Sears Home Services. I told service tech about problem, he even smelled it. He told me it can't come from the dryer. It goes away when I don't use it for a day.

Could be a problem with the vent. Check the dryer vent duct tube - make sure it didn't come loose from the back of the dryer, and that the duct is not kinked, bent, and the outside vent is opening and is not obstructed.

Yep, sounds like a vent issue.

Which can be only a few things:
1. came loose
2. obstruction like a bird
3. dead animal like a mouse
4. vent doesn't open
5. The belt is sliiping on the exhaust blower
5a. Bad belt
5b. Dirty bearing

I looked for the dryer on Parts & Accessories | Shop & Find Lawn & Garden, Appliance Parts at Sears PartsDirect | SearsPartsDirect.com and on a first glance it appears to be electric for that model #.
