    Nursing home
    Hi,
My sister called me last night and said that she was thinking about putting my father in a nursing home.she said that she went to a meeting that the speaker said that if one of the spouses goes to a nursing home the other spouse could keep up to 60,000 dollars , anything above that in bank account and his ss checks would go for his care I never heard of this part about the 60,000 only about that they could not take away his homestead if he was to go to nursing home does anyone know this to be true?
    My father lives in Michigan.

I would review this with a attorney in your state, not wanting to sound wrong but often the PR people from nursing homes, esp if they are doing a sales pitch are not always good at telling full truths ( not lies mind you) but explaining laws without full details.

I know my dads nursing home bill was about 2200 dollars and his retirement check was about 1800, and they expected mom to pay the balance every month.

As long as she had money over a few thousand dollars, she was expected to make that payment,

    Hello sky:

I know you didn't ask, but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents.

I saw my mother rot away in a nursing home, and I couldn't do anything to relieve her suffering. That pained me greatly, especially since she came to MY rescue EVERY time I found myself sent to an INSTITUTION.

In my view, nursing homes today (unless your dad can afford the very best), are worse than many prisons. Frankly, I'd rather retire in the slam than in many low income nursing hellholes.

    But, what do I know?
