When is it too late to file for child support
I was contacted by a young man stating I was his father. I didn't know about him until contact was made. And he did not mention child support at all. I just want to know my position in the event it's brought up.
I feel extremely terrible with this situation because if he is my son, I wasn't given the opportunity to be apart of his life.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Its too late to file for support when the child reaches majority. However, its possible a support order was filed years ago and they could never find you.

    Including California residents?

Yes. A child cannot file for support once they have been emancipated, which means living on their own. A married person would be considered emancipated.

Generally support does not start until a court filing asking for support. But it is possible for a filing to have been made and entered as a default judgment because they couldn't find you.

If you are worried about this person asking for support forget that. However it is possible the mother may come after you for back support. It's even more possible if she was on public assistance at some point and the state wants reimbursement.
