Take him to the vet. These dogs are prone to things such as mange and skin allergies.
My pits both get red rashes on their flanks. They constantly lick it until it is bright red and sore, or at least looks sore. This happens every so often and it does alternate between my two pitties. I did buy a medication that is suppose to be all natural that helps heal any rash or nick or small cut and helps deter the dog from wanting to lick further...
Sometimes dogs can develop lick granulomas. Its when a dog targets a certain part of its body and licks it until it become raw or even a open wound. The reason the dog licks so much, is because that certain spot becomes very itchy. Sometimes these develop because the dog is bored and isn't getting out enough or enough exercise. It can also happen if your dog is suffering from Anxiety. A good way to help deter this is to put something icky tasting lotion/medicine on the open sore that won't burn or irritate the skin further.
I have taken my dogs into the vet previously for their rashy flanks, but it seems the only solution a vet has is to give a Steroid shot in the butt and some antibiotic pills... From my experience with that it didn't seem to work. The rash came back almost immediately. The ointment seemed to work really good for me. Its called Buddy Boo Boo and its by Cloud Star. http://www.cloudstar.com/966E5914346...Grooming+Items
Pitties are prone to certain skin diseases... Mange typically happens if the dog is extremely stressed out and the immune system is weak. If it is a skin allergy, you will need to consult a vet. In the mean time, you could try the boo boo ointment. That stuff works great! Did I mention it heals things quickly with little to no scarring?
