My son is 22yrs old. Between the age of 18 up to now, he has had several jobs, none of which to hold a future. He lost his license for a DUI and currently having to pay back the debt that goes with it. We have kicked him out of our house about 2 years ago for lack of respect to us also did not want to help around the house either. We traded in his vehicle since he could not drive or make the payments on it. At this time, we brought him back to our home so that he could get back on his feet. Such as look for a job, possibly go back to school etc... We are willing to help him as long as he wants to help himself. I am not seeing an initiative for any job hunting. Our phone rings all day long and into the night(did I mention that he has no cell phone now either since he can not pay the bill) from people that I do not recognize. My husband and I sometimes wonder if maybe asking him to join the armed forces will make him a man with respect and responsibility. Not sure what to do anymore...

Doubt the military would want him if he has no desire to work hard.

So what if the job appears to have no future, it is a job, he needs to work any job he can find,

Sounds like time to kick him back out of the house again, you are not helping him by allowing him to do nothing

Try giving him an oppurtunity to show enough concern for his own well being by giving him a two week notice, that if he does not get a job within those two weeks, he must leave. I can understand that you are trying to help your son out, but that gives all the responsibility of initiative to care for himself back into his hands. My mother had done the same thing for one of my brothers years ago and it worked.

And of course you can recommend the military, it can change a persons life, as can the peace corp ( another great group) But something tells me he does not want to have to work that hard

There are few jobs out there right now and even if a person wants to work hard they are still not getting jobs so don't get down on him for not getting a job right now.

The military may just want him. He quite could land in a position in the military that suits him and his abilities. There are so many different jobs in the military other than just shooting a weapon or a tank at the enemy nowadays that I am almost positive he would be interested in pursuing. Sit him down with a few of the recruiter brochures and go over them with him and see what strikes his fancy. You never know until you do it.
