Ask Me Help Desk - Bathroom vent pipe

I would like to move a wall in my bathroom however there is a 3 or 4 " copper vent pipe. Is it within the established building codes to make a bend either 45 or 90 degree bend and re-attached to the existing vent pipe in the attic? I am located in Ontario Canada

In terms of plumbing code in my area, if you change over form the copper pipe to newer PVC or ABS plastic pipes then you must continue to run PVC (or ABS) up and through the roof. In other words, you can't transition over from the copper pipe in the floor to PVC and then transition back over to the copper pipe in the attic... you would need to add a new vent through the roof and most likely a new roof boot (flange).

All that being said, you can definitely transition from the copper pipe in the floor to PVC using a code complaint Copper x PVC SHIELDED CLAMP... see image. Then you can run new PVC pipe and use (2) PVC 90 degree elbows to run the new vent up to the attic no problem! Use 45s to offset the pipe and connect back to the attic pipe.

Whether you connect onto the old vent with another Copper x PVC Shielded clamp or run a new vent up and through the roof will depend on the codes that prevail in your area. If it was me and I wan't having it inspected I would definitely just transition back over to the copper in the attic. If it is to be inspected you should just call the inspector and ask him want he wants you to do... ;)
