Okay this question is for my son in Pensacola! He has a one piece fiberglass shower that he wants to take out and do an acrylic shower base and then tile the walls. The measurements are 46 1/2"(W)X 45 1/2"(L). I'm in Texas so that's all I know. He is having a hard time findinding a shower floor close to those dimensions. He doesn't want a tile floor in the shower. Any suggestions??

Yes, it is kind of odd dimension...

He will be able to fit in 48" Width shower pan. As far as the depth goes, he can put in 30", 32", 36" and 42" deep. That will create two corners framing the shower in front.

Check with companies like Lasco at Lasco Bathware for exact dimensions of their shower bases.

Biggest I could find is made by MAAX a 42" x 42" x 5" threshold (you do NOT have to purchase the walls):

The width could be framed from the 46.5" to 42" no problem... ;)

My son wants the walls tiled. I have asked him to send me pictures of the shower right now. I will be going to visit in a few weeks. Sure hope his wife can wait and they don't do something stupid... like hire someone!

Thanks Milo. I'm waiting for my son to send me some photos. I gutted my masterbath. Took out a one piece fiberglass tub/shower surround and put in a retrofit shower floor from swanstone and porcelain tiles on wall.

I suggested turning the studs sideways to give more room in the shower area. The shower has no exterior walls. If it was me I would take out the garden tub and make that the walk-in shower and use the old shower area for a larger walk-in closet or very large linen closet.

Now I'm brainstorming! If they still want a tub they could put a soaking tub where the shower is and build the bigger walk-in shower where the garden tub is.

Well he couldn't wait for me and hired a tile guy to mud a shower floor. I did help him remove the old one piece fiberglass surround using my dewalt roto cutter and a tile cutting bit. The tile guy is charging him from $3 to $5 a sq ft for the job. Sure wish I lived closer!!

Do you see that large crack in the foundation? I hope it doesn't transfer through to the tiles on the shower base. I told my son to get some Quick crete crack filler to fill it before the tile guy got there.Also the shower valve was not attached to any wood and he nicked the copper pipe at the top when cutting through the drywall. That has been secured now though.

I'm betting he'll be OK! Ideally, the tile guy (or your son) filled that crack and it won't transfer... only time will tell!
