What makes popping noises in the attic during cold weather?
Our new home (1 story ranch with full walkout basement) was frame built in 2004-05. We've had cold weather before and never had the popping noises in the attic that we have this year. It has been a wet year here in West-Central Missouri and last year, I added blow-in insulation of about another 4 inches on top of R-30 bats that were installed before the sheetrock went up. The popping just started yesterday evening but continued through the night & is doing it again some this morning. We had sunshine yesterday & today so far same; but temps are down to 12 at night. Any comments?

Heat and cold can cause expansion and contraction. I believe water expands about 11% when frozen.

Your daily temps range over 100 degree during the year, you will hear popping in the attic from the plywood decking expanding/contracting and moving the rafters.
