In most cases if you have a furnace and air conditioner, not a heat pump you can connect the Rc aznd Rh together.

We have oil heat and it is forced air through vents... we just want to know if we need to hook the RC and RH and to the R terminal because it is winter here in canada and we decided to hook up the new thermostat...

Usually the outdoor unit will state heat pump or count the number of thermostat cable wires going to the outside unit or what is the exact brand and model of thermostat.

If the old terminal was an R, Connect Rc too Rh and call it R. Some tstats are factory jumpered in this configuration.
