I have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan with remote control. I have had this for several years. In the past month I find the light on and no one has touched the remote. I have tried changing the battery in the remote, but the light still comes on when ever it wants to. There is no set pattern to its going on. It could be several day between or it coould be several times within a day.

Anyone have any ideas? Is this the ghost of Xmas past?

Assuming you are in the northern hemisphere where it is winter (and thus a fan is not required for now), I'd suggest leaving the battery out of your remote and see if the fan still comes on.

If it does, then you are getting interference from some other source (garage door opener, wireless router, microwave, etc.). On the other hand, if it does not come on, the remote is the culprit. Repair is difficult, if not impossible, so I'd suggest a replacement remote.

It is not the fan that goes on it is the light. I have removed the battery and the light still comes on once or twice a day now. No set time.
I read somewhere about resetting the dip switch, which I see in the remote, but there must be a counter part dip switch (I would think) in the light itself. Anyone know if there is a corresponding dip switch in the light? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reset these switches?

Whether it is the light or the fan that comes on, it is most likely the same problem. Since you have verified that the remote is not causing the problem, it must be outside interference.

You are correct that there will be a corresponding set of DIP switches in the fan head somewhere. It could be in the ceiling canopy or inside the motor enclosure. Either way, it is not very convenient to locate. It is possible that changing the switches will help your problem, but there's no guarantee. If you do decide to tackle it, just set the two sets of switches (remote and fan) to the same pattern.
