There are 3 sets of wires in my hallway light. Red together, black together and a white and black together. Then there are 2 white wires hanging that were in the light. The light worked fine and I am replacing it with a newer light. Is that all right to have 2 whites going into the light?

Yes, it should have had Black tape on it.
A meter or tester can tell which is the hot.

Instead of tape use a Sharpie marker.
