    Shut the water off att the cold water supple. Now turn offf the power and open the closest hot water faucet to break air lock and frain the heater into the floor drain off luck, tom

    Hi Loudhouse...

    As Tom pointed out, you need to shut the shutoff at the cold water inlet to the water heater. The shutoff could be an older style shutoff or a ball valve type shutoff as in the diagram below.

    Anyway, shut off the shutoff on the pipe on the right (should be cold water) and then shut off the gas or the electrical breaker to the heater. Then, open the hot water side of a two handle faucet and DRAIN the heater from the drain located at the front bottom of the tank.

    Let us know if you plan on replacing the unit...
