The video out is not working--audio still good--for both the dvd & vhs--component video seen to work. Any advice please!!

Have you checked the cable itself? Try swapping one of the audio cables on both ends and see if that helps.

Have you tried connecting something else to that TV's input? Have you tried the Sony recorder on another TV?

Try resetting the unit (from page 102 of the manual):

1. With the unit connected with the component cables (so you could get access to the menu) press "SYSTEM MENU"
2. Select "Setup" and press "ENTER"
3. Select "Options" and press "ENTER"
4. Select "Factory Settings" and press "ENTER"
5. Select "Start" and press "ENTER"

You'll lose all your settings doing this, but it's worth a shot.

If this doesn't work, the best I can tell from that (which you probably already knew) is that the composite video output is busted.
