Its my first time on here so hello to all.

Quick question. I have a charge on my credit card that I do not recognize. I also do not have a receipt for it. Do merchants keep itemized receipts for purchases. For example, would I be able to get an itemized receipt from my credit card company listing everything for this purchase. By the way, it was a grocery store purchase.

On your credit card statement (usually on the back) is a conflict resolution process. You use this process to protest a charge you don't recognize. The credit card company will go back to the merchant for a signature authorization or other details to support that the charge is yours. If they can't they will remove the charge.

Itemized receipts are kept by merchants NOT by the credit card company.

Contact the merchant for the charge you don't recognize. Typically, they should be able to help you identify the purchase.
If you don't like their answers or they won't give you any, initiate a charge back through your credit card provider. Chargebacks require the merchant to provide copies of receipts and authorization numbers to the Credit Card company, and they cost them anywhere from $15 to $35 in fees.
If you have problems with the merchant, tell them that you'll initiate a chargeback unless they provide the info you want. Since they'll have to provide it to the CC company anyway if you initiate a chargeback and pay a fee, they'll generally help you identify the charge.

If the charge truly wasn't made by you, then contact your Credit Card provider to dispute the charge, and get a new card number. However, be honest - if there is any chance the charge was yours, accept it and move on.

One of the advantages of using credit cards to make purchases is that the CC company functions as an intemediary. In this case you do NOT deal with the merchant. You are being billed by the CC company, NOT by the merchant. The merchant is billing the CC company.

As I said, your CC company has a procedure for this situation. So you just need to contact them and they will work to substantiate or remove the charge.

I agree--I actually had this happen to me one time and did a dispute with my credit card company--they cleared it up in a matter of a few days.
