I purchased a home in Salem , Mass. And was told by the previous owner that I would be needing my ejector pump serviced. He said to have it done every 3 or 4 years. I cannot find a company that performs this maintenance and it is difficult to get a quote to replace one as someone pumps it out and then someone else replaces it. It is a whole house ejector pump as the entire house is below grade. There is a large pit/ basin below a regular sewer cover in my yard that holds the pump and it pumps up a small incline maybe 35 ft or so to the city sewer. Is anyone here familiar with these?

In my area it is plumbing contractor that services sewer ejector pits and equipment. We pump it out, vacuum the pit, pressure wash it, vacuum again. We also take out pumps and clean them - or replace them if necessary. Then we reinstall the system and test it.

One of our Experts is from Mass. I am sure he will offer his advice based on Mass experience.

In my area, you don't mess with these pumps until there is a problem... very rare to hear of anyone spending time/money maintaining something that works good.

If you are worried about maintaining the unit you can just open the tank lid and look inside and should be able to see the pump. You can probably wash it down from above ground using a hose or you could probably put on some rubber boots and climb in and check the unit and the tank out at the same time.

Heck, in my area, if you are going to pay me to take that pump out and clean it I'm probably going to charge you just as much as I would to install a new one. It is, after all, pretty much the same job! I wouldn't fix what isn't broke!

Otherwise, if you don't throw the wrong things (tampons, paper towels, floss, mop strings, etc.) in your plumbing system your pump should last for quite awhile.

Tell me, is there a back up sewage ejector here, or just the one ejector?

Hi guys and thanks for responding! I was told only that I have a sewage ejector and nothing about a backup. Ideally, I would assume that a good setup for me (it serves the entire 2 bath home) would be to have a backup pump so that I would be able to use my home if the first fails and also some form of backup power so that I may use my home in case of a longer lasting electrical outage. Is this possible to do? I am purchasing a home backup generator.

Also, do you do business in my area massplumber?
