The manager of my building is constantly watching my every step in common areas in the buidling through the cameras. Then after a while, I find out that she reports my guests and me, and who is staying in my apartment over night. She has already made 3 reports to the Board of Directors of the building commenting on my guests and me. There was no any prohibited activities made by my guests or myself however. I feel like it's a violation of my privacy. What can I do in this situation? Thanks in advance.

You have no privacy rights in public. Your landlord is allowed to watch you in common areas. She's also allowed to report what she sees to anybody she wants. She's not allowed to lie, though.

But, as long as nothing negative came of her report, there's nothing you can do. If something DID happen, tell me what, and tell me what the report said to prompt it. Certainly, you'll be entitled to a copy.

Are you prohibited from having guests overnight? There may have been complaints from other tenants that they think you are having too many guests over too many nights.

Your manager can legally monitor you outside your own apartment on camera or in person as it is a public area. No laws prohibiting anyone from lookng out their own windows "spying" on the neighbors either.

Ok, so I see that they have security and are watching things in public places, but where are they violating your privacy?

This is not it, what they view in person or over security cameras is just that public.

And there must have been complaints about you or your guests for them to have been doing this.

You also don't say whether the manager is reporting on our tenants. It may simply be part of the manager's job to monitor activities and report on them.

But since you know the cameras are there and that they are part of the security provided by the complex, you have no claim of violation of privacy.

As to filing reports with management, again it would depend on whether you were the only tenant being reported on or if any of the reports are false for you to have any recourse.
