I am installing a 1 piece shower in the basement. I bought an oatley solvent weld drain that has a rubber and felt washer. The bottom half I assume needs to be solvent welded before I place the shower over it. Any ideas on how I can place the shower over the drain without knocking off the washers or an easier drain I could use?

I tried looking for a drain that I could attach to the shower completely (top and bottom) then slide the drain into the 2 inch pipe but I couldn't find one. I don't even know if they exist.

Hi Rick...

If you can line the drain up correctly you should be able to bend the washers and install them through the front of the shower base by bending them and then inserting through the drain hole... should work fine (rubber washer is against the bottom of the base). This should work for you.

Otherwise, they do make a drain like you are asking about... installs and then you drop the entire unit over the drain pipe. Then you will need to cut the pipe using an inside pipe cutter... see images. I show the drain in both plastic type and brass type... both will work fine here. Use silicone sealant instead of putty... ;) Putty can squeeze out over time and should not be used with the shower drain assembly. You may only find this type of shower drain assembly at a local plumbing supply store.

Now, what kind of substrate are you setting your one-piece shower in.. Mortar? Structolite? You should install the shower unit in some kind of bedding substrate, but, of course, check installation instructions regarding this matter.
