Ok I have what I thought a simple project.. ok I have a 5K watt generator that has a 240 v outlet.. I want to connect my 240 v arc welder to it.. only problem is that the plugs are different.. I already have the proper plugs to adapt the connection.. I made a one foot adapter ( pig tail )... my problem is in what order do the white and black wires go? On one end of my adapter I have a male 20 amp plug.. it has a sideways "T " on the left and a horizantel opening on the right and the ground.. I know the green wire goes to the ground prong but where does the black wire and white wire go?? I think the white ( neutral ) goes to the left and the black to the right.. Am I right?? Need help.. jess

There is no neutral for the welder. Two hots and the equipment ground. The two hots are interchangeable.

Are you sure that the welder doesn't draw more than 20A? There are different receptacle patterns for a reason--so you don't plug something into an inadequate circuit.

5,000 Watts is pretty light for an arc welder. Check the amperage DRAW The plug will also have an amp rating that is recommended by the manufacturer. Providing you still want to proceed it is White= Line, Black= line, and green is ground.
