I am running wire from the circuit panel to the ceiling in the kitchen, then to a switch, back to the kitchen ceiling light. I am using the same circuit to the same thing for the dining room light with a switch, and a light on my deck also with its own switch. The switch in the dining room and the deck works but the one in the kitchen does not. I can't seem to feature what is wrong

In an ideal world, you should have run 2 conductor from the panel to one light, then the other and the other. Daisy chained, so to speak.

You didn't have to, but I recommend 3 conductor from each swith to their respective light.

2 conductor means 2 conductor with an additiional bare ground.

2 conductor from the switch to the light will work, but it does not allow certain automation devices to be used because of a lack of a neutral.

Lets start with. The whites passing through the box, should be together and the blacks passing through the box should be together.

The white of the lamp will connect to the whites passing through the box.

Now the white wire going from the ceiling to the box should be taped the color black. Use a small amount of black tape.
White and black go to the switch.

So, in the ceiling box, you now have a black(sw) and a black-tape(sw) and black.

Guess what happens.

The black goes to the black passing through and the taped black goes to the fixture.
