I have a 11 week old wired hair pointing griffon-large breed
I am home all day with him and in the processs of crate training which we began @ 8 weeks, that part is going well. He is on a srtict 2x day feeding scheduale and has plenty bathroom breaks outside as well as 2 long walks a day combined with human interaction @ home with the kids and then back to the crate. I take him out to his pee/poo spot before and after his play times and long walks. MY QUESTION: WHY DOES HE CONTINUE TO ALWAYS PEE/POO IN HIS CRATE, IN FACT IMMEDIATELY AS WE PUT HIM IN , HE WILL SQUAT AND PEE??? IT IS SOO FRUSTRATING BECAUSE HE REALLY IS GETTING ALL HIS NEEDS MET IN TERMS OF FOOD, BATHROOM, PLAY/SOCIALIZATION/ AND EXERCISE

He is only a baby, you can relate to that I am sure. Only ll weeks old and y ou probably think you are giving him enough social interaction and meeting all his needs. Obviously not, because he is smart enough to try telling you that you are not by probably looking you in the eye and peeing in his crate. Are you crate training him because you plan on starting a new job soon so he will be left alone part of the day? Or is he going to be in the crate while you are wondering around the house and he can see you there and can't be held and cuddled. He needs that. Give a dog love, yet firmly, and he will be good the rest of his life. Be diligent in housebreaking him, even if it has to be 3 am, just do it and you will have a well trained dog because he will know what is expected of him.

Crates are okay for night time sleeping if you don't want your pet in the same room as you or roaming the house but he is telling you absolutely that he needs more loving and tender care. He is a smart animal, treat him like one of the family for heavens sake !

Have you checked with a vet and ruled out anything medical, like a bladder infection?

If so, and he has a clean bill of health, is the crate perhaps to big for his needs? I know that most people with puppies that will be a large breed buy a crate that will fit the dog when he's full grown. Sadly that crate is often way too large for a puppy and it can put a hamper on crate training.

Also, have you washed the bedding that he pees on? If he smells his urine then he may just continue to pee because he's marking his territory.

Give him time, he is really young still and puppies do tend to not have much bladder control. At 4 months of age they usually do catch on a lot quicker.
